Gordon Prentice has been Member of Parliament for
Pendle since 1992 when he won the seat from the Conservatives.
His main political interests are tackling poverty, and improving
housing and health, including dentistry.
He lives in Barnoldswick when not at Westminster.
With so much outstanding countryside in and around Pendle, it
became a longstanding personal ambition of his to see the land
opened up to the people. His Private Members Bill on the "Right
to Roam" led to the Government bringing in the Countryside and
Rights of Way Act in 2000. This had a significant effect on opening
up the countryside to the public.
Gordon is a member of the Public Administration
Select Committee, which looks into the machinery of government
issues. These have included the handling of occupational pensions,
the publication of civil servants' memoirs, the honours system
and the nomination to peerages of donors to political parties.
He also sits on the human rights watchdog, the Council of Europe.

What
the media says about Gordon Prentice
"The unlikely fact is that Mr Prentice has displayed not merely a rebellious
streak but a dry wit and understanding of the political process that many of
his colleagues lack. The fact is that this Scot. who arrived in East Lancashire
as a slightly gloomy in-comer, has become vital to both the area and Westminster." Bill Jacobs, Parliamentary Reporter,
Lancashire Evening Telegraph, August 2004
"He is neither self-righteous nor tiresome;
merely fastidious. Although unable to stick to the party line
for long, he would hate it to be thought that he was being helpful
to the Opposition. It is seldom his intention to hurt the Labour
movement." Quentin Letts, Daily Mail, October
2004
"Independent minded."
Quentin Letts, Daily Mail, December 2004
"One thing you cannot call the Labour candidate (Gordon Prentice) is a lapdog.
His independent mind has won him respect in the constituency." Craven Herald, 2005
"Courageous" Dominic Lawson. The Independent July 2008
"A man Lancashire can be proud of." Quentin Letts. Daily Mail. May 2009
"Gordon Prentice: serial rebel, serious
parliamentarian, as irritating as a mosquito, as persistent as
an itch." Ann Treneman. The Times. May
2009
"The independent-minded and fearless
Pendle MP is the hero of the Cashcroft affair"
Kevin Maguire, Daily Mirror, March 2010
